The predecessor of the Department of Geography and Spatial Information Technology was the Geography Department established in 1982 at Ningbo Normal College. The first group of undergraduate students was admitted in 1983, and in 1994, the department started admitting students for the undergraduate program in Geography Education. In 1996, the Geography Department of Ningbo University was established by merging of three schools. It began enrolling undergraduate students majoring in Geography Science (Teacher Education) and Resource Environment and Urban-Rural Planning and Management (starting in 1999). In March 2000, the Department of Civil Engineering at the former Ningbo University merged with other departments to form the Department of Urban Science at the School of Architecture and Environmental Engineering at Ningbo University (2000.3-2015.12, renamed in January 2016). In 2006, it was authorized to grant master's degrees in human geography (enrolling students in 2007). In 2010, geography became a key discipline in Zhejiang Province. In March 2017, the major of Human Geography and Urban and Rural Planning was included in the Sino-French Joint College of Angers University at Ningbo University. In 2018, the authorization point for first-level master's degrees in geography was approved (enrollment began in 2019), and in 2019, a doctoral program in fisheries economic management was jointly established and began enrolling doctoral students. In 2021, Geography, Human Geography, and Urban and Rural Planning were selected as national and provincial first-class undergraduate majors. After more than 40 years of effort by three generations, the discipline of geography has formed a talent training system for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students, that is oriented towards normal education, foundation, application, and internationalization.
This discipline is recruiting students majoring in geography (teacher education), human geography and urban-rural planning (Sino-French cooperation), and enrolls 160 undergraduate students annually. It has a first-level discipline master's degree in geography and 7 second-level master's degree authorization points in physical geography, human geography, cartography and geographic information systems, coastal and oceanic geography, education (geography) teaching, agricultural master's degree in rural development, and civil engineering master's degree in surveying and remote sensing engineering. It enrolls more than 90 students annually. It participates in the construction of second-level doctoral programs in fisheries economic management, etc., and enjoys an annual quota of 3-4 doctoral students for enrollment.
The department has a strong faculty and a high academic level. There are more than 60 full-time faculty members in the discipline, with 76% holding senior professional titles and 97% holding doctoral degrees, forming a reasonable age, education, title, and academic background structure of the faculty team. There are currently 3 experts in the National Talent Engineering Program (including 1 flexibly introduced), 2 Humboldt Scholars from Germany, 4 talents in the Provincial Ten Thousand Talent Program, 3 talents in the Provincial 151 Talent Engineering Program, 6 young and middle-aged discipline leaders in provincial universities, 8 overseas high-level talents in the city's "3315" program, 12 leading and outstanding talents in the city, and 2 theoretical engineering talents in the city. There are more than 50 doctoral and master's supervisors. Zhejiang Collaborative Innovation Center for Land and Marine Spatial Utilization and Governance Research, Ningbo Collaborative Innovation Center for Land and Marine Spatial Utilization and Governance Research, and Ningbo University Donghai Institute are all provincial-level scientific research platforms that have been approved for establishment. To meet the needs of research-oriented universities, the department has established six research directions: coastal zones and global change, coastal physical geography and ecological security, marine economic geography, land spatial planning, geographic information systems, and intelligent perception and modeling of coastal geographic environments.
In the past three years, the teachers of our department have edited and contributed to more than 20 professional textbooks. They have also obtained four provincial first-class courses, including "Regional and Analysis Planning," "GIS Design and Application," "Earth Evolution and Human Environment," and "Modern Physical Geography." In addition, they have completed six provincial and ministerial-level educational reform projects and have received multiple teaching achievement awards from the China Geographic Information Industry Association, Ningbo City, and the university. We have also established online open courses on the icourse website, including "Regional Analysis and Planning," "Urban and Regional Transportation Geography," "Coastal Zone Resource Development and Evaluation," "Soil and Vegetation," "GIS Design and Application," etc.

The department has excellent experimental teaching conditions, with a laboratory area of 3500 square meters and more than 20 practical teaching bases (including the Education Three-Excellence Teacher Development School, field internship bases, and graduate innovation practice bases), with a total equipment value of over 10 million yuan. It has experimental and practical teaching platforms such as "Teaching Laboratory of Geography and Planning, Ningbo University", "Virtual Simulation Laboratory of Aerial Survey and Remote Sensing", "Joint Laboratory of Regional Planning and Environmental Metrology", "Ningbo University Institute of Remote Sensing and industry Technology", and has established off-campus training bases in more than 20 middle schools, natural resource management or planning and design institutions, including Ningbo Middle School, Yinzhou Middle School, Lihuili Middle School, Ningbo Forest Farm, Ningbo Botanical Garden, Ningbo Natural Resources and Planning Research Center, Ningbo Natural Resources Ecological Restoration and Marine Management Service Center, Ningbo Planning and Design Institute, etc., which can provide a good teaching practice platform for talent training.
In the past five years, subject teachers have obtained more than 60 national major, key, general, and young scientist projects, such as the National Social Science Fund, the National Natural Science Key Fund, and the National Key Research and Development Program. They have also obtained more than 100 provincial and ministerial-level projects, and more than 100 municipal-level projects. The average annual scientific research funding exceeds 20 million yuan. They have published nearly 800 high-level academic papers, obtained more than 20 patents, and received over 20 provincial and municipal research/teaching awards.
With the advancement of the "Double First-Class" construction of Ningbo University and the key construction of universities in Zhejiang Province, our department will focus on the school's strategic development of the "marine discipline cluster", combine and leverage its own advantages, and develop coastal geography, achieving breakthroughs in professional construction and disciplinary strength!
