Introduction

The School of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Geography Science (formerly known as the Faculty of Architectural, Civil Engineering and Environment, Ningbo University) evolved from the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture when Ningbo University was founded in 1986. Currently, the School comprises three departments: the Department of Civil Engineering, the Department of Geography and Spatial Information Technique, and the Department of Municipal and Environmental Engineering, alongside an Experimental Center. Within the School, there are twelve research institutes: the Institute of Structural Engineering, the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering, the Institute of Building Materials, the Institute of Bridge and Road Engineering, the Institute of Engineering Management and Intelligent Construction, the Institute of Geographic Information Technology, the Institute of Coastal Zone and Global Change, the Institute of Human Geography and Spatial Planning, the Institute of Coastal Physical Geography and Ecological Security, the Institute of Eco-Environmental Science, the Institute of Pollution Control Technology, and the Institute of Water & Environmental Engineering. The School oversees two independent research institutions: the Institute of Hydraulics and Ocean Engineering and the Institute of Rock Mechanics, both affiliated with Ningbo University. It boasts the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Civil Engineering, the National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center for Civil Engineering, and two Zhejiang Provincial “2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers” (Collaborative Innovation Center for Coastal Urban Rail Transit, and Collaborative Innovation Center for Land and Marine Spatial Utilization and Governance Research). Additionally, it houses the Zhejiang-Canada Joint Laboratory of Sustainable Urban Drainage, the Ningbo University Donghai Institute, and several industry-university cooperation platforms, including the Ningbo University - Zhejiang Etone Special Foundation Research Institute and the Ningbo University Institute of Remote Sensing and Industry Technology, jointly established with enterprises. The School is proud to have the Civil Engineering discipline recognized as a first-class discipline (Class B) in Zhejiang Province and a key discipline (Class A) in Ningbo universities. Geography is also designated as a key discipline during the “12th Five-Year Plan” period in Zhejiang Province and a key discipline (Class A) in Ningbo universities. It offers doctoral programs in the second-level disciplines of Structural Engineering and Rock and Soil Mechanics, as well as a jointly-run doctoral program in Fishery Economy Management. It is also authorized to offer master's programs in the first-level disciplines of Civil Engineering and Geography, along with professional master’s degrees in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, and Rural Development. Currently, the School enrolls over 470 graduate and doctoral students.

The School offers three undergraduate majors: Civil Engineering, Geography (Teacher Education), and Environmental Engineering, with a current enrollment of 680 full-time undergraduate students (excluding freshmen in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering). Among them, the Civil Engineering major is selected as a Construction Program for the National First-class Undergraduate Major, a Provincial First-class Major, a Provincial Key Major, a Municipal Key Major, a Municipal Flagship Major, a University Key Major, and a University First-class Major. It has been selected for the Provincial “13th Five-Year Plan” Advantageous Major Development Project and collaborates with the University of Newcastle, Australia, to offer a “3+2” undergraduate-master’s joint training program. In 2013, the Civil Engineering major passed the professional evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and in January 2020, it achieved national accreditation in engineering education. The Geography major (Normal major) is selected as a Construction program for the National First-class Undergraduate Major and a major within the Zhejiang Provincial “14th Five-Year Plan” Normal Education Innovation Experimental Zone. The Environmental Engineering major is selected as a Construction Program for Provincial First-class Major and a University Key Major.

The School currently has 159 faculty and staff members, including 136 teaching and research personnel, among whom there are 35 full professors and 47 associate professors.

In the past five years, the faculty members of the School have undertaken over 490 government-commissioned projects, including more than 80 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, nearly 120 provincial and ministerial projects, 1 major project competitively entrusted by the Ningbo Science and Technology Bureau, and 5 major projects from the same bureau. Additionally, they have completed over 1,100 enterprise-commissioned projects, with cumulative research funding exceeding RMB 200 million. The faculty members have published 650 high-level research papers, and 21 professional books, secured 112 national invention patents, 134 utility model patents, and 24 computer software copyrights. Moreover, the faculty has won 37 research awards at various levels, including 1 First Prize and 1 Second Prize in Science and Technology Awards of Zhejiang Province, 2 First Prizes and 1 Youth Award for Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences in Zhejiang Province, 1 First Prize in Science and Technology Awards of China Nonferrous Metals Industry, and 1 First Prize in Science and Technology Awards of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering.

Students from our School have achieved remarkable success in various national competitions in recent years. They have won 2 Gold Awards in the China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Competition, 2 Gold Awards in the China College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, 1 First Prize and 1 Second Prize in the National Structure Design Contest for College Students, 2 First Prizes and 4 Second Prizes in the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, 2 Second Prizes in the Zhou Peiyuan’s Competition of Mechanics for College Students in China, 2 M Awards in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, and 11 First Prizes in the National BIM Application Skills Competition for Colleges and Universities. Additionally, 12 graduates from Civil Engineering and Engineering Management majors have been honored with the “Outstanding Graduate Award of China Civil Engineering Society”.

The School of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Geography Science’s motto is “Wisdom Guides Progress; Solidity Shapes Innovation”. Acting on it, the School adheres to the overall tone of high-quality and intensive development, aligns itself with the “Double First-Class” Construction of Ningbo University, focuses on consolidating foundations, strengthening advantages, and bridging gaps, and comprehensively stimulates the vitality of the School’s educational endeavors. With a pragmatic and truth-seeking spirit, the School strives to create a new landscape as a distinctive research-oriented institution.
