报告人简介
Dr. Dave Chan is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta in Canada. He has been teaching at the University of Alberta for over 35 years and served as the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies for over 15 years. His expertise and research interest lies in computer analysis of soil deformation, constitutive modelling, and soil mobility analysis. He has published many papers on computer analysis in geotechnical engineering. He has provided geotechnical consulting advice on a variety of projects from site investigation to construction and state of the art numerical analysis of building foundation and earth structures. He also served as the associate editor of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal (CGJ). He is the recipient of the 2023 G.G. Meyerhoff Award of the Canadian Geotechnical Society for outstanding contributions in geotechnical and foundation engineering. He is also a two-time recipient of the R.M. Quigley Award for best paper published in the CGJ and he served on the Board of Examiners of the Association of Professional Engineering, Geologists and Geophysicist of Alberta (APEGA).

The seminar provides an overview of technical writing in English. It will address common issues of the English language in technical writing. Examples of writing will be given to point out some common issues/mistakes. This discussion will cover the journal impact factor (JIF) and a typical structure of a journal paper and how to present the results in a story. A brief discussion on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, to write technical paper will be given in the seminar.
